I’m sure we all remember the viral campaign that won the alleged support of millions last year. Kony 2012, a campaign powered by an organization called Invisible Children, requested that supporters merely spread the word regarding the criminal actions of Joseph Kony. Their goal was to make Kony famous in order to ensure his capture by government authorities. There was no call to action. There was merely the suggestion that the public share strategically created videos (see link) and pictures that were often set as profile and cover photos on Facebook. The Kony campaign has accomplished virtually nothing, aside from being remembered as a short-lived viral sensation. However, I do believe that the creators of this campaign were successful in creating an incredibly artistic and manipulative piece of propaganda.
