Painting Reality: Mapping the Motions of an Intersection

The artist IEPE organizes actions s in public spaces address specific aspects of the urban condition, such as traffic. In this project bicyclists spill 500 liters of eco-friendly paint which is spread throughout a Berlin intersection by 2,000 unknowing participants driving cars. This performance piece draws attention to the daunting amount of traffic that passes through Rosenthaler Platz. All traffic, willingly or not, participated in this performance piece that draws attention to density of traffic. Whether or not is was the artists intention this becomes a physical representation of our ‘carbon footprint.’ Large cars spread a majority of the paint in a matter of minutes while bicycles and pedestrians hardly leave an imprint. Is this a crime or an artwork that brings attention to blight urban conditions?
