In the year 2000, a man was convicted with pedophilic charges, lost his family and livelihood, and was put on medication for sexual deviancy. These feelings came upon him suddenly after years of blissful and typical marriage. He was yet unable to stem his urges and was forced into prison after making sexual advances among colleagues during therapy. Eventually, it was discovered that the man suffered from a brain tumor that applied pressure to his orbitofrontal cortex; this tumor was ostensibly responsible for his sudden and disastrous lapse in behavior. The question here becomes an ethical one as much as a legal one. Should this man receive such hash penalties for behavior that demonstrably occurred when he was not sound of mind? Does his unsoundness of mind override the charges against him?
