The Mission District aka The Latin Ghetto by Alberto Martinez

In the Mission District in San Francisco where I am from, we use paintings, graffiti, and murals to explain our heritage, our pain, and to acknowledge which gang is active in the area. They are everywhere. On apartments, fences, anywhere people can add art or graffiti at, they will do it. It is an expression of the way we live life. Although people who get caught by the police will either be fined or other consequences, that does not stop people from doing it. No matter if it is a mural of the Virgin Mary, the way we once struggled and are struggling as Hispanics, or a graffiti tagging of a gang, it always has an involvement with the way of life in the Mission, which a lot of people that live there call it, the Latin Ghetto.
