Japanese artist Mao Sugiyama cuts off own genitals and serves them at a banquet in order to support asexual rights

In 2012, in order to raise awareness of asexual rights, Japanese artist, Mao Sugiyama, had his genitals surgically removed. On April 8, Sugiyama tweeted on the popular social network, Twitter, “”[Please retweet] I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen …Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location”. The 22 year old artist underwent the surgical removal of his genitals and then continued to prep them garnished with parsley and mushrooms, for a banquet. He served this to five people who paid Sugiyama $250 per plate. Sugiyama said the dinner was designed to raise awareness about “sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people.” When the story went viral in Japan, there were mixed reactions to Sugiyama’s presentation. However, Japanese authorities deemed the banquet “legal because there is no law against cannibalism in the country”. 1. This is one of the most shocking true ‘crime’ stories out there. I think the most wild part when looking into this case is that there is a surprising amount of debating if cannibalism is legal or not in Japan. Looking into it, there’s a bunch of different sites stating that ‘no, cannibalism is illegal’ and vice versa. I think that’s so odd. I think that they tried to charge him with indecent exposure or something to stop this, but I believe no charges were filed.
