Stephanie Sarley is the artist behind this unique fruit art. It all started when she made a short video on Instagram of her fingering various fruits. It was a total hit because of its uniqueness. The most graphic and popular video is of Sarley sticking her finger in a blood orange and gushing out red juice that looked like blood. See video attached. Sarley quickly began getting a lot of backlash from women outraged and men who objectified it. Her profile was removed by Instagram because of inappropriateness. The real issue here for Sarley was that of female oppression and censorship.
Although Sarley was using fruits as a euphemism for a taboo topic, vaginas and sex, she is criticized by the effectiveness of her approach. Some believe that it steers away from what it is trying to convey making it counterproductive and harmful. Others on the other hand love her art and highly support her cause.
