From Concern to Controversy: The Two Sides of the Ariana Grande “Wicked” Debate

Wicked, a classic broadway show that has been known for many years now has recently released a second film in its series and has become among the top categories for entertainment. The movie itself gained massive popularity for its casting of singer Ariana Grande. Many fans were instantly hinged to the movies because of her feature on the movies as Glinda. For most Wicked fans, the release of Wicked: For Good was major news. However, not everyone had the same reaction to the film.

Since its debut, fans and social media users grew overly attentive to the state of Ariana Grande. Fans noticed her strikingly different appearance now in comparison to earlier this year. Throughout the duration of her time on Wicked, she has changed completely. Although this movie was a complete accomplishment for Grande, it was not all happy. Following the issue of the second movie, people ran to social media to critique various parts of her. One being that she has lost significant weight, and fans began to worry heavily. Ariana shuts it down by claiming that this is the healthiest she has ever felt or been. People see right through that as her bones are so painfully visible. Aside from her physical being, the film has driven Ariana and her co-star Cynthia Erivo to become undoubtedly close. Some even argue, a little too close. Cynthia and Ariana share a unique bond to which they feel very maternal towards each other sharing tattoos, multiple physical interactions, and common interest. A lot of people saw this bond to be uncomfortable. Tik Tok holds various coverage on this backlash all together.

Ultimately, the drama surfacing regarding Ariana Grande and Cynthis Erivo proves just how fast excitement can lead to unexpected controversy. For some, this release was amazing news and unfortunately for others, it was something they can throw backlash onto. As Wicked: For Good continues to dominate headlines, it becomes clear that the line between concern and criticism can easily blur in the public eye.

  1. I agree that Ariana Grande’s appearance is a stark difference in comparison to her from a few years ago, but I do not feel that as an audience that gives one the right to comment on it. Speculating, theorizing, and making comments about it only draws attention to something that is more likely than not a very hard time in her life. I think this experience has really shown how normalized para-social relationships have become. People think that just because she has been in the public eye for most of our and her life that grants them permission to make comments about her weight, looks, etc. Women face so much criticism due to the media and public eye, I just think that it is about time we realize that our opinions good or bad are not going to change the reality of this kind of situation and we should just let people get through things themselves. We should be approaching people with kindness and compassion and be there when they are ready to come out with whatever may be going on.

  2. Although I agree Ariana Grande’s physical appearance is jarring, this situation demonstrates how audiences expect celebrities to maintain a constant appearance and public image. Aside from the weight loss, Grande’s tour after Wicked has gained a lot of attention, specifically a moment when Grande takes out her bun and reveals her iconic ponytail. This moment shows how fans have developed strong expectations around her identity and the symbols that represent the celebrity, Ariana Grande. When she changes her hairstyle or weight, audiences may react strongly because it challenges the familiar version of her that they have come to expect.
