The video above comes from Belgian artist Jan Fabre. This cat tossing performance in Antwerp was posted online, and received a lot of outrage. What I don’t understand is why this is considered art. I don’t see any real message behind the performance, and the whole thing seems like something kids or teenagers would do because they got bored. I am not against using animals as part of art performances, but when the animals could potentially get hurt, it’s a problem. To me, this performances raises a lot of ethical issues. One of the issues is how much destruction can you do in the name of art? Another issue is how much much harm can you cause to another living thing in the name of art? Does calling something “art” excuse it from the ethics that apply in everyday life? How far can you go while still being in the realm of art?
