Tyler, the Creator is the lead member of rap collective OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). The video of “Yonkers” is just one example of a Tyler, the Creator song that uses both homophobic slurs and has misogynistic references. His lyrics raise questions for me because he tweeted supportive comments when Frank Ocean (another Odd Future member) publicly came out, and Odd Future has a female member (DJ Syd the Kyd). Tyler says that people take stuff too seriously and that slurs he uses (like faggot) are just words, and that people need to look beyond what he is saying and onto how he says it (like with rhyming patterns and other lyrical strategies). So because it is said in a creative format, that makes it okay?
