Horrorcore: Rap’s Obsession with Killings

October 2, 2015February 14, 2021 bgoeltzenleuchter

What happens when you combine the sadistic inner thoughts of slasher filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock and Wes Craven with the hard bassline beats of rap? A subgenre of hip-hop with a cult-like following that began in the 1990s called “horrorcore”. Horrorcore directly preceded gangster rap in terms of chronological time,

Modern Rap Music Condoning Rape and Violence Against Women

November 11, 2014February 14, 2021 bgoeltzenleuchter

In Rick Ross’ lyrics in the song You Don’t Even Know It, he mentions drugging and raping a woman. Even though this caused a huge scandal and had a few repercussions for Rick Ross, there was no real debate or change in how rappers rap about women. This form of

Today musicians are regarded as lyrical artists that put emotions into rhythm. Eminem has been regarded as one of the greatest rap artists of past decades. The Fuck Shit Stack that rap has become

April 27, 2013February 14, 2021 bgoeltzenleuchter

“Fuck Shit Stack” by musician/comedian Reggie Watts is essentially a satire on what rap lyrics have become. What was once a form of poetic expression of hardship has turned into a popular music genre with lyrics most people do not even really listen to. In his song “Fuck Shit Stack”,

Sorry for the terrible quality- but I can’t find a clear video anywhere. If someone else can come across a clearer version, feel free to send me the link and I will update it. Dirty Kuffar (Kuffar is Arabic for “nonbeliever”) is a 2004 music video performed by Muslim British

The New BlackFace: Super Size Jewelry, Drugs, Guns, Women, & Rapping

April 11, 2013February 14, 2021 bgoeltzenleuchter

When one examines the programming of BET and/or MTV, or listens carefully to any Hip Hop radio stations, it’s clear that the minstrel shows from the 1840-1900s are alive and well. The black make-up, red mouths, banjoes, and expressing their inexplicable love for “ol’ massuh.” have all been replaced with

Tyler, the Creator & OFWGKTA

March 28, 2013February 14, 2021 bgoeltzenleuchter

Tyler, the Creator is the lead member of rap collective OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). The video of “Yonkers” is just one example of a Tyler, the Creator song that uses both homophobic slurs and has misogynistic references. His lyrics raise questions for me because he tweeted

About Us

The Art | Crime Archive (ACA) is a collaborative laboratory, teaching center, and web-based platform devoted to the study of the shadow space where art and crime overlap. The ACA’s online platform was created in 2012 and since its inception has functioned as a participatory archive for a wide range of scholars, artists, students, and community members. The ACA welcomes submissions of media and accompanying short essays on art, crime, and culture. The ACA peer-reviews submissions and only accepts materials that significantly contribute to the broader academic and artistic discourses on creativity and actual criminal behavior. As a general rule, it does not publish submissions related to crime fiction or figurative works.
