Last summer, Netflix released a new docuseries titled π˜‹π˜’π˜³π˜¬ π˜›π˜°π˜Άπ˜³π˜ͺ𝘴𝘡 in which journalist David Farrier seeks out odd and macabre tourist destinations all around the globe. The show explores the culture and tourist trade surrounding sites that have been historically linked to tragedy, crime, and death. The series is only 8 episodes long and depicts experiences that range from dangerous and unusual to downright bizarre and tacky.

The concept of dark tourism is pretty controversial. Though some may argue that the main attraction of dark tourism sites is their historical value rather than an association to death and tragedy, I think Netflix may have been milking the macabre as a means of cashing in on people’s morbid curiosities without caring much about how the topics were presented to the viewers. Perhaps this is yet another prime example of how Capitalism swallows everything in its reach, but don’t you think that exploiting death and suffering is taking it a bit too far?
