In today’s cinema scene, there has been an increasing amount of murders being given a spotlight on the big screens. More recently, Charles Manson has been featured in Quentin Tarantino’s 9th movie, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Ted Bundy has been featured in a Netflix movie, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, and in another Netflix series, Mindhunter, we have Edmund Kemper, Charles Manson, and David Berkowitz to name a few. The trend seems to be showing killers and the crimes they’ve committed that landed them the infamy. All of the media mentioned have done well and this goes to show that this may never stop. They are even over dramatized in some cases and seem to be glorifying these killers when we should see them for what they are: murderers. But why does this continue? Is the reason being that there is a romanticizing of these killers? Or is it more the mere morbid fascination? What makes people keep coming back to watch these movies/shows? To me there is a difference in true crime shows that present facts, but in this case, most if not all is fairly over-dramatized. So what is it? Why do we keep allowing this to be popular? The controversies they create or the mere morbid fascination? Maybe it’s the art doing what it intends, drawing audiences to see what they want.
