Joaquin Guzman Loera, aka “El Chapo”, escaped from a maximum security prison in his native country of Mexico in 2015. What makes this so intriguing is the fact that this was his second successful escape from a prison, first one being in 1993. So how has the leader of one of the world’s largest drug cartels and one of the FBI’s most wanted managed to walk out of two maximum security prison’s? During his first escape, he was taken out of prison in a washing cart, some say by the same police he has on his payroll. His second escape was a carefully thought out plan that resulted in the construction of an underground tunnel. Not just any tunnel, but a well developed and organized tunnel with lighting and ventilation. Joaquin Guzman Loera’s crime techniques have not only made him one of the wealthiest criminals in the world, but have also allowed him to escape from prison and kept him on the run once again.
