New York has always had a large artist community and a big part of this are the youths making extra money by performing in the Subway. Mayor Bill de Blasio recently decided that he wants the New York Police Commissioner William Bratton to make his next project to get rid of the subway dancers. Blasio got elected for his attitude to help the poor. The fine used to be to give $50 tickets to anyone breaking “MTA’s rule against performing and panhandling on the trains”. But this has since escalated to arrest for “reckless endangerment”. The police department is taking away many poor youths way of going from poverty to fame or at least poverty to a job. How does this form of art that doesn’t hurt anyone get turned into a crime for jail time?
