Alexander Riegler, an Austrian artist, has taken art to a new level by installing a one-way bathroom mirror in a restaurant in Vienna. This mirror allows men to look into the ladies’ room from the men’s room. According to the Heute newspaper, Riegsler said that the mirror is an attempt to “stir people into a discussion of voyeurism and surveillance,” in an era when almost everyone is being watched. But don’t worry ladies he isn’t favoring any gender, even though this art experiment took place last October, he planned on placing the mirror so that the women can look at the men’s faces while they stand at the urinal. As anyone would probably assume, the restaurant received numerous complaints and city officials want the mirror to be taken down and claim it is harassment and might even shut the place down. The restaurant eventually put up signs warning women about the mirror (although it is not in any of the stalls) because of the amount of complaints from customers. In my opinion he is invading people’s privacy to make a point; but this might be the only way he can convey his message and grab the public’s attention. What point is the artist trying to make? That we live in a society with very little privacy to the point where we aren’t even safe in the bathroom anymore? Leave your comments and opinions!
