According to an article published in April, 2013 in The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, Canadians have found a new way to approach graffiti in their major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. Graffiti became a problem in these cities because artists were illegally painting on buildings, and the owners of the buildings were responsible for cleaning it up. As a response, Toronto put in place a program to prevent the crime of graffiti from occurring in their city. This program is called the “StART” program and it encourages artists to do graffiti in places where officials have made it legal in the city. By giving artists a space to create their works, criminal behavior can be limited, and building owners do not have to pay for damages caused by others. I think this is a great way to decrease the amount of crime in the city while still allowing for artists to express their creativity to the city.
