The band, The 1975, played their 1st show in Dubai last month. During their song “Loving Someone” they used the colors of the LGBTQ+ flag in their background. Matty Healy (singer) heard a male fan shouting “Marry Me” as he passed by. After hearing this, Healy went up to the fan and gave him a hug and asked if he’d like a kiss. When the fan agreed, Healy kissed him on the lips. The 1975 are known for being vocal about their support for the LGBTQ+ community. The song, “Loving Someone” is seen as a LGBTQ+ anthem to some fans because it’s a reminder that a person is allowed to love anyone. However, Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, which is known for their extremely strict anti-LGBTQ laws. They currently criminalize homosexuality with up to 10 years in prison. Many fans were critical of Healy’s actions due to him jeopardizing the fan’s safety. While others supported his actions and advised fans to delete videos of the kiss in order to protect the fan.
