Mickey Avalon, born to a non-practicing Jewish family, from Southern California. He is known for his contribution to the American rap genre of music. From his early teens, Avalon worked alongside his mother dealing marijuana and followed in his father’s footsteps as a heroin addict. He prostituted himself to support his drug addictions until he discovered his place in the music industry. He battled with his drug addiction until his early 20’s. He was also a part of graffiti crew called CBS (Can’t Be Stopped / City Bomb Squad) based in Los Angeles. Mickey Avalon released his first self-proclaimed album in 2006. His top 2 singles included the tracks “My Dick” and “Jane Fonda.” In 2007, he collaborated with several music artists, including Andre Legacy, Simon Rex, and Beardo in their band Dyslexic Speedreaders. After controversy between the band members, Avalon quit the bands and went solo. A sample of his rap, entitled Waiting to Die, is provided in the Youtube link above. He proclaims himself the “Kosher Salami”. Kosher deriving from the Jewish language, meaning “pure”. His lifestyle and music have been highly disputed because of its nature of substance abuse and prostitution. Spectators noted that Avalon’s grandparents, who were survivors of the Holocaust, would be ashamed to see what their legacy entailed. He was even booed off the stage as an opener for The Red Hot Chili Peppers and in another opener for his crude lyrics and mean demeanor. Mickey Avalon’s vulgarity has struck many of his audience the wrong way to question his credibility as a rapper. What makes a man so engrossed in sex, heroin, and death, so popular?
